Winter Tires on Vancouver Island

As of Tuesday October 1, winter tires are required to drive on most of British Columbia highways until April 30. However, not all of the highways on the southern coast and on Vancouver Island require them due to milder more temperate weather. The Malahat on Vancvouer Island and Sea-to-Sky Highway to Whistler require winter tires. The symbols on the sign should correspond with the symbol on the tires if it meets the requirements.

There are two different types of winter tires as defined by the Insurance Company of British Columbia (ICBC) - All season mud-snow tires meet the requirements for winter tire designation in BC. Additionally the Mountain/Snowflake tires also meet requirements for winter tires and add extra traction for areas that regularly expect snow. For additional information about ICBC’s classification of tires, visit the ICBC Winter Tire site.

All of our vehicles at National Car & Truck Rental Vancouver Island are equipped with all season mud and snow tires. This is indicated by the ‘M+S’ symbol on the tires.

Some routes may also require drivers to carry chains, especially ski mountains or cold climates. If you’re planning on visiting Mount Washington near Comox Valley in the winter for example, you will most likely be required to carry chains.

We always recommend checking the provincial government website for the most up-to date and accurate information about road conditions and requirements.
